Full description

Key West has no shortage of sunset cruises, and many of them carry more than 100 people with a band and a crowded bar. This trip is built for travelers who want something calmer. It has a capped guest count, room at the rail, and a pace that leaves time to watch for dolphins before the sky starts changing color.

The catamaran slips out of the historic seaport and heads along the island's western waterfront. Your captain points out the sights as you pass. You'll see Mallory Square, where the nightly street-performer celebration is gearing up. Next is a car-free resort island just across the channel, and then Fort Zachary Taylor, a 19th-century brick fort that once guarded the harbor. Once you're in open water, the crew raises the sails and the engines go quiet.

Next comes the part of the evening where your captain's local knowledge matters most. Your captain reads the water, tide and recent sightings to decide where the local bottlenose dolphins are most likely to be feeding or traveling. These dolphins live around Key West year-round, and the crew shares how they hunt, communicate and raise their calves while you watch. The boat keeps a respectful distance, and the dolphins often choose to come closer on their own.

After the dolphin viewing, the evening slows down. The tapas are prepared fresh each day in the operator's own kitchen. The menu changes, but the house favorites are chilled shrimp cocktail and tuna poke, alongside other chef-selected bites. Drinks are unlimited and chosen to go with the food: boutique red and white wines, house sangria and champagne, with soft drinks and water for everyone.

As sunset approaches, the captain repositions the boat so the sun drops cleanly into the horizon with nothing in the way. Because there are fewer guests on board, you won't have to fight for a spot to take your photo.

Important information

  • Parking near the seaport is paid only, through garages, lots and meters, and it gets busy around sunset.
  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You'll need it to be served alcohol.
  • Wheelchairs can't be accommodated. The boat isn't wheelchair accessible, but strollers are fine.
  • The trip runs rain or shine. A passing shower is common in the Keys, and the clouds afterward often make the sunset more colorful.
  • Departure times follow the sun. Departure times shift through the year to match sunset, especially in spring and fall when the time changes quickly, so double-check your ticket.
  • Dolphins are wild. Sightings are frequent, but no one can promise exactly where or when the pods will appear.
  • Dress in layers. It can feel noticeably cooler on the water after sunset, even in summer, so bring a light jacket.
  • Plan dinner for later. The tapas are generous, but most guests still have dinner afterward, so book a table for about an hour after your scheduled return.
  • Good for special occasions. The small group size makes it a popular choice for proposals, anniversaries and honeymoons. Let the crew know at check-in if you're celebrating.
