Full description
Every evening, people pack Key West's waterfront to watch the sunset, and the result is often a sea of phones and shoulders. A sunset sail gives you the same sky with far more breathing room. You also get a drink in hand, a musician playing nearby, and a view that isn't blocked by anyone.
The trip starts from the historic seaport on the north side of Old Town. You'll board a sleek, wide sailing catamaran built for stability and space. Its broad decks mean you're not stuck in one seat for two hours. As the boat motors out of the harbor and the crew raises the sails, the bar opens and the musician starts their set. Expect easygoing island tunes, acoustic covers and the kind of songs people hum along to.
The route follows the island's western shoreline, and your captain shares stories along the way. You'll pass the old seaport, where Key West's wrecking and sponging fleets once tied up. Next comes Mallory Square, where street performers, jugglers and food carts draw the nightly sunset crowd, which looks a lot more charming from the water. You'll also see the old Navy pier and Fort Zachary Taylor, a brick fort from the mid-1800s that guarded the harbor during the Civil War. Ask the crew questions as you go, since they sail these waters daily.
As sunset gets close, the captain positions the boat for an unobstructed view west. The sky moves through gold, orange, pink and violet as the sun meets the horizon. On evenings near a full moon, turn around afterward and you may catch the moon rising on the opposite side. It's one of the quieter perks of being out on the water at this hour.
The included bar covers champagne, homemade sangria, boutique wine, premium beer, cocktails and soft drinks, with filtered water always available. The chef's spread changes regularly but usually includes peel-and-eat shrimp with cocktail sauce plus a selection of other hors d'oeuvres. It's enough for a substantial pre-dinner snack, though most guests still head to dinner after docking.

View on Google Maps (opens in a new tab)Important information
- Parking around the seaport is mostly paid lots, garages and metered streets, and it gets busy in the hour before sunset.
- Bring a government-issued photo ID. You'll need it to be served alcohol, and the drinking age is 21.
- Families are welcome. Guests of all ages can join, and kids get soft drinks and snacks.
- The boat isn't wheelchair accessible.
- Sunset times change throughout the year. In Key West, the sun sets as early as about 5:45 p.m. in late fall and as late as about 8:20 p.m. in early summer, so confirm your exact departure time.
- The weather has the final say. If conditions aren't safe, trips may be rescheduled. Cloudy evenings often bring the most vivid colors, so a few clouds aren't a reason to cancel.
- Dress for the breeze. Wear comfortable clothes and flat, non-slip shoes. Bring a light jacket in winter, because it cools down quickly on the water after dark.
- Plan your photo spot. Head to the side facing the sun about 15 minutes before sunset, then let your phone camera expose for the sky rather than the boat to get the best colors.
- Plan for dinner afterward. You'll dock in the middle of Old Town's restaurant scene, so a reservation for about 30 minutes after your return time works well.
